Interested in visiting the Basilica in the coming months, but not sure what to do? Whether you enjoy sacred art and music, or are looking for a quiet place to pray, there are endless opportunities. But with over 80 chapels and oratories to explore, it can be difficult to know where to start. In today’s post, you can find five things to do and see at the Basilica this summer.

Docent giving tour of Basilica 1. Take a guided tour

If you’d like to explore the National Shrine, we offer guided tours that last just under one hour and include visits to the Great Upper Church and chapels on the Crypt level. There’s no better way to learn about the history of the National Shrine, its architecture, and its ecclesiastical artwork! In our tours, you’ll see glittering mosaics, magnificent domes, and breathtaking sculptures depicting Our Lord, the Blessed Mother, and various saints.

Tours are available upon request to accommodate Spanish speaking visitors, as well as visitors who are hearing or visually impaired. You can visit our Tours page for additional information and scheduling.

Adam Chlebek plays organ at the Basilica2. Experience uplifting sacred music

Every Sunday during July and August, the Basilica hosts organ recitals at 6:00 p.m. featuring the Basilica’s own organists as well as acclaimed guest organists from across the U.S. and Canada. Not only can you hear some of the finest sacred and classical repertoire on the majestic organs of the Basilica, but you’ll also have the chance to hear the beloved Knights Tower Carillon performed by Jeremy Ng in a prelude before each recital. All performances are free and open to the public – view the schedule.

Mary Garden Statue3. Explore the gardens

During the summer months, the gardens of the Basilica are brimming with vibrant blooms and lush foliage. Walk along the terrace of Mary’s Garden to the Magnificat Fountain, or sit by the reflecting pool and contemplate the Scripture passages inscribed in the stone. In the Rosary Garden, you can admire the flowers and reflect upon the Mysteries of the Rosary depicted in vivid mosaic tile.

Our Lady of Aparecida 4. Discover sacred art traditions from around the world

Did you know that the Basilica not only honors Mary as the patroness of the United States, but celebrates Marian traditions from around the world? With over 80 chapels and oratories dedicated to the Blessed Mother under various titles, visitors can explore popular Marian traditions such as Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Lourdes, or other devotions like Our Lady of Ta’Pinu and Our Lady of Aparecida. You can also find significant moments in American Catholic history portrayed in mosaic and see sculptures of influential American saints.
