Online Book of Condolence for Pope Francis

As the faithful around the world mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to share your prayers, comments, and memories in our Online Book of Condolence. A Pope of the people, Pope Francis inspired millions with his humility, compassion, and tireless devotion. As the first Pontiff from the Americas, he brought fresh insight to the papacy, rooted in mercy, justice, and the embrace of the marginalized.

In tribute to his extraordinary life and ministry, Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, shared: “We give thanks to God for his 55 years as a priest, his 32 years as a bishop, and 12 years as Pope. A life of service to the Church and to God’s people, we remember him and strive to ‘go out to proclaim the merciful embrace of the Father’ as he urged in his 2015 homily at the Basilica. May he rest in peace and Our Lady usher him into the presence of her Son.”

May your soul rest in peace, I think it was time that God wanted you with him in heaven. You were a pope of the people, and loved by all. You set good examples and were a caring human being. I got to see you in DC my first time to ever see a pope. ... I will cherish that time and pray that we get a new pope that is as caring and wonderful. Jennifer in Colorado

Go forth, good and faithful servant, into the everlasting Arms of Our Lord! May the beautiful soul of Pope Francis....be......in and with Our Lord in Paradise.
Intercede for us Francis that we have never forget that we are all sinners, and have Christ Jesus as our Savior through repentance. Intercede for those, Francis, that do not know Him, that their hearts may be opened to His Love and Mercy!✝️

My love and prayers go to God for his wonderful gift of Pope Francis. He brought so many people back to the church reminding us all of the gospels and the love of Jesus. He showed how you can take our faith and put it into action for the benefit of the poor, the disadvantaged, the environment and support of the church. His service and life is a beautiful testament to all the religious. God bless him and God bless the church. May he rest in eternal peace.

Ten Years ago when. Pope Francis came to DC and celebrated mass at the Basilica, I was a reader at the Mass. I felt blessed and privileged to- and took the opportunity to pray in Pope Francis’s company for all that he cared about: human beings everywhere.

Thank you for the many gifts you are leaving us: your life of prayer, your words as a Shepherd, your lessons in Christianity.

Rest in Peace, Dear Pope Francis. May the next Pope be as inspiring, as Carin and understanding as you are.

As so many people have already said, Pope Francis was always concerned with the poor, the most vulnerable and children. Yet he will also be remembered for the legislation he enacted. The changes in the Code of Canon Law are too numerous to mention. They dealt with criminal behavior, pedophilia, and the empowerment of religious. Other documents included his concern for the environment and the need to evangelize. Anyone ministering in the church should “have the smell of the sheep” as he so often said. The best way to remember him is to do as he did.

Light a Candle for the Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis

As we mourn the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, we invite you to honor his life, legacy and unwavering devotion to Christ by lighting a candle at Mary’s Shrine. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis led the faithful with a heart of compassion, welcoming the marginalized and underprivileged with open arms. Your candle, lit in prayerful remembrance, will burn alongside hundreds of others in chapels and oratories throughout the upper and lower Church of the National Shrine.
