As the faithful around the world mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to share your prayers, comments, and memories in our Online Book of Condolence. A Pope of the people, Pope Francis inspired millions with his humility, compassion, and tireless devotion. As the first Pontiff from the Americas, he brought fresh insight to the papacy, rooted in mercy, justice, and the embrace of the marginalized.

In tribute to his extraordinary life and ministry, Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, shared: “We give thanks to God for his 55 years as a priest, his 32 years as a bishop, and 12 years as Pope. A life of service to the Church and to God’s people, we remember him and strive to ‘go out to proclaim the merciful embrace of the Father’ as he urged in his 2015 homily at the Basilica. May he rest in peace and Our Lady usher him into the presence of her Son.”

From then on I know that you will be good and holy shepherd of the flock ,All through your pontificate you are always in my prayers . I watched on Tv coverage all your pastoral visit to different counties . I watched your last appearance and listened to your brief message on Easter Sunday and your last tour on your Pope mobile giving blessings to children and the faithful . I saw you look weak and fragile and I can’t help but prayed asking God to grant you strength to finish your tour.

Pope Francis was truly the Pope of the people and for the people. There continues to be an outpouring of love and admiration for Pope Francis which is well deserved. I lived in San Juan, Argentina for a time in the early seventies, a beautiful country with wonderful people. And to have the Pope from Buenos Aires ... what can I say, one of the great cities of the world. We, not just Catholics, have been blessed to have such a great man, a man of God who was not afraid to go down a different path. I thank him for his audacity to make changes, tenacity and willingness to help the poor and indigent. Let his deeds and humanity be a lesson to all.
