Online Book of Condolence for Pope Francis

As the faithful around the world mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to share your prayers, comments, and memories in our Online Book of Condolence. A Pope of the people, Pope Francis inspired millions with his humility, compassion, and tireless devotion. As the first Pontiff from the Americas, he brought fresh insight to the papacy, rooted in mercy, justice, and the embrace of the marginalized.

In tribute to his extraordinary life and ministry, Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, shared: “We give thanks to God for his 55 years as a priest, his 32 years as a bishop, and 12 years as Pope. A life of service to the Church and to God’s people, we remember him and strive to ‘go out to proclaim the merciful embrace of the Father’ as he urged in his 2015 homily at the Basilica. May he rest in peace and Our Lady usher him into the presence of her Son.”

I am deeply saddened by the death of Pope Francis. Our loss is of much more than one person.
The Ignatian Solidarity Network, in an email to supporters, captured in two sentences what His Holiness meant to so many, Catholic and non-Catholic alike:
"Throughout his twelve-year pontificate, Pope Francis invited the Church to live a prophetic Gospel vision. Through his words and deeds, he challenged us all to defend and promote the inherent dignity of all God’s creation, both people and planet."
A prophetic Gospel vision culminating in his Prayer of Hope in this Jubilee Year. Anticipatory, active respect for the "inherent dignity of all God's creation, both people and planet." Francis regularly "defended and promoted" this belief and value to a world seemingly and increasingly devaluing its people and the planet.
I prayed for Francis's recovery, and now I pray in thanksgiving for his lifetime and for his eternal rest.

Pope Francis truly struck a chord in the hearts of people throughout the world. His journey was truly remarkable, and his actions were "Christ-like" in a way that made us sit up and take notice. He was very much the right pope for our modern world, and he made me feel very blessed to be a Catholic.

Holy Father, look kindly on the life and work of your humble servant Francis, a shepherd to the Church in a time filled with tribulation. May his life leave an enduring mark on us so that we may strive to live with more faith and zeal than ever before. May he, the successor of St.Peter, be received into the kingdom and join the Church Triumphant at your table.

Light a Candle for the Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis

As we mourn the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, we invite you to honor his life, legacy and unwavering devotion to Christ by lighting a candle at Mary’s Shrine. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis led the faithful with a heart of compassion, welcoming the marginalized and underprivileged with open arms. Your candle, lit in prayerful remembrance, will burn alongside hundreds of others in chapels and oratories throughout the upper and lower Church of the National Shrine.
