Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion:

We invite you to partake in the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion beginning at 3:00pm on Friday, April 19. The Most Reverend Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will preside with Monsignor Walter R. Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, as celebrant and homilist. This liturgy will be broadcast live on EWTN as well as the National Shrine’s YouTube page. Come and experience this moving liturgy as we commemorate the earthly death of our Lord, a death which three days later would bring salvation to all the world. The faithful will hear from the Solemn Proclamation from the Gospel of John of Jesus’ Condemnation and Death and includes individual Veneration of the Cross by the Congregation.

Veneration of the Relics of Christ’s Passion:
7:00 am – 6:00 pm (Except during Stations of the Cross at 12:00 p.m.), Crypt Church

On Good Friday, April 19, the National Shrine will have Exposition of the Relics of the Passion in the Crypt Church from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 pm. The relics will be displayed for veneration by the faithful throughout the day except for the hour between 12 noon and 1:00 p.m., at which time the Stations of the Cross will be celebrated. Following the Stations, the relics will be returned for veneration until 6:30 pm.

The relics include a particle from the table of the Lord’s Supper, stone particles from the Garden of Gethsemane, particles of the pillar of the scourging, the purple garment worn by Jesus, a spine from the crown of thorns, stones particles from Mount Calvary, a particle of the inscription tablet, shavings of the nails or spikes, particles of the sponge and reed, particle of the seamless linen garment worn by Jesus, the lance which pierced his side, the bindings and cloths used in the burial of Jesus, stones from the Holy Sepulchre, and a particle of the True Cross. Also displayed are relics of Mary, the Mother of Jesus; her sister, Mary, wife of Clopas.
