Pray for Pope Leo XIV

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites all the faithful to join in fervent prayer for our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.

During this sacred moment in the life of the Church, your prayers are a profound gift to the Holy Father. As Monsignor Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, shared, “At the National Shrine, the sacred liturgy is at the heart of our mission, and at all our Masses, we now pray for ‘Leo our Pope.’”

We urge Catholics everywhere to commit to praying the prayer below, entrusting the Holy Father to the care of our Heavenly Father.

Prayer for Pope Leo XIV

“O God, who chose your servant Pope Leo XIV
in succession to the Apostle Peter
as shepherd of the whole flock,
look favorably on the supplications of your people
and grant that, as Vicar of Christ on earth,
he may confirm his brethren
and that the whole Church
may be in communion with him
in the bond of unity, love and peace,
so that in you, the shepherd of souls,
all may know the truth and attain life eternal.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.” *

Viva Pope Leo XIV! I pray for many years of joy, humility, and steady leadership by the hands of Pope Leo XIV. I look forward to seeing His Church grow under a new shepherd, and especially those of the first Successor of Peter to hail from the United States and Peru. I pray for a more synodal Church that continues off the legacy of Pope Francis, as well as a better focus on people in the peripheries of our world.

Dear Pope Leo IV,
I pray that your papacy will include all who hunger for the love and mercy of Christ. I am so thrilled that you are our first American pope. May God richly bless your papacy and you. I know you will have many responsibilities regarding the flock of our Lord and Savior. I pray He will give you the strength to carry them on your capable shoulders.

Amen.

Light a Candle at the Basilica

Light a Candle for Pope Leo XIV

We invite you to light a candle — either at the National Shrine or in your own home — as a visible sign of your prayers and support for Pope Leo XIV. Let this flame symbolize your hope, your faith, and your unity with the universal Church as we give thanks for the Holy Spirit’s guidance during this sacred time.

Vigil candles burn in chapels and oratories throughout the upper and lower Church of the National Shrine. Each burning flame represents the faith of the supplicants and their fervent prayers entrusted to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s loving intercession. We consider it an honor to light a vigil candle for you and pray for your intentions, which will be kept in confidence.
