Online Book of Condolence for Pope Francis

As the faithful around the world mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to share your prayers, comments, and memories in our Online Book of Condolence. A Pope of the people, Pope Francis inspired millions with his humility, compassion, and tireless devotion. As the first Pontiff from the Americas, he brought fresh insight to the papacy, rooted in mercy, justice, and the embrace of the marginalized.

In tribute to his extraordinary life and ministry, Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, shared: “We give thanks to God for his 55 years as a priest, his 32 years as a bishop, and 12 years as Pope. A life of service to the Church and to God’s people, we remember him and strive to ‘go out to proclaim the merciful embrace of the Father’ as he urged in his 2015 homily at the Basilica. May he rest in peace and Our Lady usher him into the presence of her Son.”

May God hold Pope Francis and keep him in the palm of his hand. He was a special Pope and one that definitely made a difference. He was kind and caring and touched the lives of so many. He didn’t judge but accepted us for our uniqueness. I remember when he made a visit in 2015 and I remember the impact he made on the people in my area. He introduced me to Mary the Undoer of Knots and I keep that prayer close. I say the prayer and remember his time when he visited. He brought love to us all. He will be in my prayers and I hope he continues to pray for us here on earth. Thank you Pope Francis. You are a true blessing.

During my 84+ years, Pope Francis was the 7th Pontiff to be Christ's Vicar here on earth.
He was four years my senior, though December 17th is the date each came to birth.
I believe he prayed God's will for all, while all our perceptions might not match. . .
May the differences be lifted to Our Lord: to correct, re-frame, or 'patch.'
He was our 'Papa' for 12 years; many wondered at his 'ways;' ~
while God alone is Master of . . . each life's allotment of its days.
His last day here was a testament ~ Faith flowing through his words and hands. . .
though what he did and said were restrained, he was forging loving 'bands!'
The world awoke to a shock Monday, second morn of the Easter Octave. . .
Pope Francis suffered a stroke in the night ~ and his life ~ no one could 'save.'
So, now we lift our prayers that he. . . will, in heaven, Rest In Peace.
We trust that Jesus, in loving care, shares Mercy that will never cease.
Then, Pope Francis, from his 'place up there' ~ can pray for the needy and the poor ~
begging The Lord to send blessings 'down' ~ and ease their struggles as never before!
May we all be better for sharing this time ~ praying fervently ~ in prose or in rhyme!

Light a Candle for the Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis

As we mourn the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, we invite you to honor his life, legacy and unwavering devotion to Christ by lighting a candle at Mary’s Shrine. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis led the faithful with a heart of compassion, welcoming the marginalized and underprivileged with open arms. Your candle, lit in prayerful remembrance, will burn alongside hundreds of others in chapels and oratories throughout the upper and lower Church of the National Shrine.
