Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 20, 2024

Basilica of the National Shrine Upper Church

We invite you to join us in celebrating the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

On Sunday, October 20th, the “Heritage Talks” series continues with a homily by Monsignor Walter R. Rossi, J.C.L., rector of the National Shrine: “Eucharist: Our Firm Foundation.” This homily will be given at the solemn Eucharist at 12 Noon and will be livestreamed.

In 1997, then Father Rossi completed his licentiate in Canon Law at The Catholic University of America and began his tenure as director of pilgrimages. During this time, Father Rossi also served as secretary-treasurer and president of the National Association of Shrine and Pilgrimage Apostolate (NASPA).

Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1987, Father Rossi was elevated to the rank of Chaplain to His Holiness with the title “Monsignor” by Pope John Paul II in 2004.

The following year, the Board of Trustees of the National Shrine appointed him the second rector and the eleventh director of the National Shrine, a position in which he continues to serve today.

As the spiritual and administrative leader of the National Shrine for almost twenty years, Monsignor Rossi has not only fulfilled the customary presbyterial duties of dispensing the Sacraments and preaching the Gospel, he has also held the unique responsibility of directing and supervising the installation of chapels, oratories, mosaics, and the celebration of special liturgical and para-liturgical events, all of which have served to strengthen the faith and provide the faithful with inspiration and illumination of its wonders and mercies. All these efforts have helped to fulfill what Bishop Shahan wrote in 1910, that this National Shrine, would be “inside and outside a monument to artistic truth and sincerity and thus a mirror of all the beauties of our venerable and holy religion.”
