With the celebration of the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus, on July 26, we reflect upon the vital role of grandparents in the Church. As Pope Francis has noted, grandparents serve as keepers of memory, imparting wisdom and guiding new generations. They serve as role models, as encouragers, and as spiritual leaders. And just as they support the young, so too should the young cherish and care for them.
Today, we invite you to meditate upon a collection of posts of encouragement for grandparents from the Basilica’s blog, with Scripture, prayers, and more.

With Psalms of exhortation to the faithful, Proverbs encouraging the elderly in their sacred vocation, and more, this collection of Scriptures is intended to uplift grandparents in their roles as family leaders. We invite you to reflect on these verses about the blessings and calling of the elderly in the Kingdom of God.
The Love and Faith of the Grandparents of Jesus: St. Anne and St. Joachim
According to existing accounts, St. Anne was barren for much of her life. One day in her advanced years, she conceived Mary, the mother of Jesus. Saint Anne dedicated the life of her child to the service of God when she was only three – a decision that was undoubtedly formative in the shaping of the future Mother of God. Together, Anne and Joachim cultivated in the young Mary a love for God, preparing her for her role in the story of divine redemption.
