Since abortion was legalized in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, over 60 million unborn children have been killed in the U.S. Though many choose to ignore the tragedy of abortion, we as believers have a duty to defend the defenseless and take a stand for human life. We pray that God would work in the hearts of those considering abortion and reveal the truth to them. As we celebrate the value of life this month, and continue to fight to protect the unborn, we invite you to learn what the Bible has to say about the unborn and the value of life.
Life’s Value
Each life is valuable because human beings are created in the image of God, to reflect His glory:
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” — Genesis 1:27
When Does Life Begin?
The Bible is clear that life begins before birth:
“Did not he who made me in the belly make him?
Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?” — Job 31:15“You formed my inmost being;
you knit me in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, because I am wonderfully made;
wonderful are your works!
My very self you know.” — Psalm 139:13-14“Just as you do not know how the life breath
enters the human frame in the mother’s womb,
So you do not know the work of God,
who is working in everything.” — Ecclesiastes 11:4-6“Thus says the Lord, your redeemer,
who formed you from the womb:
‘I am the Lord, who made all things,
who alone stretched out the heavens,
I spread out the earth by myself.’” — Isaiah 44:24
Children Are a Blessing
Throughout the Old and New Testaments, children are described as a blessing from the Lord to the faithful:
“Then the Lord, your God, will generously increase your undertakings, the fruit of your womb, the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your soil; for the Lord, your God, will again take delight in your prosperity, just as he took delight in your ancestors’.” — Deuteronomy 30:9
“Certainly sons are a gift from the Lord,
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons born in one’s youth.” — Psalm 127:3-4
Defending the Defenseless
God cares about those who cannot defend themselves, and as His children, we should as well:
“Why should the wicked scorn God,
say in their hearts, “God does not care”?
But you do see;
you take note of misery and sorrow;
you take the matter in hand.
To you the helpless can entrust their cause;
you are the defender of orphans.
You win justice for the orphaned and oppressed;
no one on earth will cause terror again.” – Psalm 10:13-14, 18“Open your mouth in behalf of the mute,
and for the rights of the destitute.” – Proverbs 31:8“’See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.’” — Matthew 18:10
