5 Old Testament Prophecies About Jesus

Centuries before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, God revealed many details of His coming and His life on earth through the prophets – from what He would be called and how He would enter Jerusalem, to how He would sacrifice Himself for the sins of the world.

This Easter, as we prepare our hearts to celebrate Christ’s Passion, death, and Resurrection, we invite you to discover five key prophecies from the Old Testament about the Messiah.

Emmanuel, Prince of Peace

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign; the young woman, pregnant and about to bear a son, shall name him Emmanuel. Curds and honey he will eat so that he may learn to reject evil and choose good.” – Isaiah 7:14-15

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us;
     upon his shoulder dominion rests.
They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
     Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.
His dominion is vast
     and forever peaceful,
Upon David’s throne, and over his kingdom,
     which he confirms and sustains
By judgment and justice,
     both now and forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this!” – Isaiah 9:5-6

The Entrance into Jerusalem

“Exult greatly, O daughter Zion!
     Shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem!
Behold: your king is coming to you,
     a just savior is he,
Humble, and riding on a donkey,
     on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim,
     and the horse from Jerusalem;
The warrior’s bow will be banished,
     and he will proclaim peace to the nations.
His dominion will be from sea to sea,
     and from the River to the ends of the earth.” – Zechariah 9:9-10

The Sacrifice of the Cross

“Yet it was our pain that he bore,
     our sufferings he endured.
We thought of him as stricken,
     struck down by God and afflicted,
But he was pierced for our sins,
     crushed for our iniquity.
He bore the punishment that makes us whole,
     by his wounds we were healed.
We had all gone astray like sheep,
     all following our own way;
But the Lord laid upon him
     the guilt of us all…

But it was the Lord’s will to crush him with pain.
By making his life as a reparation offering,
     he shall see his offspring, shall lengthen his days,
     and the Lord’s will shall be accomplished through him.
Because of his anguish he shall see the light;
     because of his knowledge he shall be content;
My servant, the just one, shall justify the many,
     their iniquity he shall bear.” – Isaiah 53:4-6, 10-11

The Dominion of the Son of Man

“As the visions during the night continued, I saw coming with the clouds of heaven

One like a son of man.
When he reached the Ancient of Days
     and was presented before him,
He received dominion, splendor, and kingship;
     all nations, peoples and tongues will serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
     that shall not pass away,
     his kingship, one that shall not be destroyed.” – Daniel 7:13-14
