Pray for Pope Leo XIV

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites all the faithful to join in prayer for the health of our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.

Upon hearing that Pope Leo would have surgery, Monsignor Walter R. Rossi, Rector of the Basilica, released the following statement:

“I was privileged recently to meet the Holy Father at the General Audience, and convey to him the prayers of all of us at Mary’s Shrine, and now with his impending surgery, we continue to pray for him, especially to Our Lady, Help of the Sick.”

We invite you to join in continued prayer for Pope Leo XIV, and to submit your prayer intentions below.

Prayer for the Sick

Almighty ever-living God, eternal health of believers, hear our prayers for your servants who are sick: grant them, we implore you, your merciful help, so that, with their health restored, they may give you thanks in the midst of your Church. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Pope

O God, shepherd and ruler of all the faithful, look favorably on our holy father, whom you have set at the head of your Church as her shepherd; grant, we pray, that by work and example he may be of service to those over whom he presides so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care, he may come to everlasting life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

Light a Candle at the Basilica

Light a Candle for Pope Leo XIV

We invite you to light a candle — either at the National Shrine or in your own home — as a visible sign of your prayers and support for Pope Leo XIV. Let this flame symbolize your hope, your faith, and your unity with the universal Church as we give thanks for the Holy Spirit’s guidance during this sacred time.

Vigil candles burn in chapels and oratories throughout the upper and lower Church of the National Shrine. Each burning flame represents the faith of the supplicants and their fervent prayers entrusted to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s loving intercession. We consider it an honor to light a vigil candle for you and pray for your intentions, which will be kept in confidence.

Viva Pope Leo XIV! I pray for many years of joy, humility, and steady leadership by the hands of Pope Leo XIV. I look forward to seeing His Church grow under a new shepherd, and especially those of the first Successor of Peter to hail from the United States and Peru. I pray for a more synodal Church that continues off the legacy of Pope Francis, as well as a better focus on people in the peripheries of our world.

Dear Pope Leo IV,
I pray that your papacy will include all who hunger for the love and mercy of Christ. I am so thrilled that you are our first American pope. May God richly bless your papacy and you. I know you will have many responsibilities regarding the flock of our Lord and Savior. I pray He will give you the strength to carry them on your capable shoulders.

Amen.
