SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Eucharist and the Missionary Cenacle
DESCRIPTION:Easter Sunday 2024 marked the centennial anniversary of the celebration of the first Public Mass held inside the National Shrine. The celebration of the inauguration of the liturgical life of this grand and noble votive church in honor of Mary\, the Immaculate Conception\, will be celebrated throughout 2024 and 2025. \nFather Gary Banks\, S.T.\, Archivist of the Missionaries of the Holy Trinity\, will offer a talk entitled “Eucharist and the Missionary Cenacle.” We invite you to join us in the Crypt Church following the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Thursday\, March 20\, 2025. \nFollowing the event\, the presentation will be made available for viewing on the National Shrine’s Website and YouTube Channel. \n\nMore About the Speaker:\nReverend Gary Banks is a Missionary Servant of the Most Holy Trinity (ST). He was born in New York City and received his seminary training in Washington\, D.C. After ordination\, Father Gary served a rural route in the priestess South\, in middle Georgia. He was then assigned to missionary work in Puerto Rico and Mexico. Upon his return to the United States\, Father Gary became pastor of an inner-city parish in Los Angeles and associate professor in the Los Angeles and Tijuana Seminaries\, where he helped found the Catechetical Pastoral School for Spanish speakers. His last missionary tour found him back in the rural south\, serving the immigrant communities. \nIn addition to his seminary studies\, Reverend Banks holds a degree from the Pontifical Biblical Institute\, with studies at Sankt Georgen Hochschule\, Frankfurt\, Germany\, l’Institute Catholique of Paris\, the Hebrew University of Mount Scopus\, Israel\, and l’École Biblique of Jerusalem. Father Gary currently serves as an archivist for his congregation and as a researcher for Dr. William L. Portier\, the well-known Catholic historian. You can view the 4th talk of this series\, “Eucharist and Dorothy Day\,” delivered by Dr. Portier on July 20\, 2024\, on our blog. \nMore About the Talk:\nThis presentation\, the twelfth in our Heritage Series\, celebrating the “100 Years of Worship” at the National Shrine\, tells of an American religious movement that converged with the vision and theology of Bishop Shahan and his construction of this National Shrine. \nFather Thomas A. Judge\, CM\, was the founder of a lay apostolic movement that generated two North American religious congregations: the Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity for women (1918) and the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity for men (1921). Interestingly\, on September 23\, 1920\, Father Judge came to visit the sisters and ended up at the Foundation Stone Ceremony of the National Shrine. Closely following the teachings of Pope Pius X on Eucharist and Holy Communion\, Father Judge saw the Eucharist as true energizing food\, “the greater eating of His Body\, the greater drinking of His Blood\, so that we never tire of doing good for others.” \nIn 1926\, Father Judge moved his major seminary to Catholic University where it was both the admiration and the scandal of the seminary world – a supposed “religious” house with no priest in charge\, and hearty brothers and sisters\, accompanied by their chickens and roosters! Without a chaplain\, the men and women lived their Eucharistic life between the Crypt Church and the university. Their apostolic spirit readily united them with persons such as Dorothy Day\, co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement\, Monsignor Paul Hanley Furfey\, “the unofficial systematic theologian of the Catholic Worker movement\,” Professor Mary Elizabeth Walsh\, who began her career as a research assistant to Furfey\, and many other leaders of the Catholic Social movement of the 1920s and 1930s.  Most of the priests of this early religious congregation received both minor and major orders in the Crypt Church of the National Shrine. James J. Norris\, the personal secretary to Father Judge during those nascent years\, had his roots in the Cenacle movement. He became an international Catholic lay leader and a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Shrine. \nFather Thomas A. Judge\, CM is remembered in a stained-glass window in the Upper Sacristy\, honoring his contribution to the growth and spread of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.

SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Eucharist and Pilgrimage: The Great Intercessory Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Easter Sunday 2024 marked the centennial anniversary of the celebration of the first Public Mass held inside the National Shrine. The celebration of the inauguration of the liturgical life of this grand and noble votive church in honor of Mary\, the Immaculate Conception\, will be celebrated throughout 2024 and 2025. \nJoin us in the Crypt Church for the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Thursday\, February 20\, 2025\, as Reverend Monsignor Vito A. Buonanno\, Director of Pilgrimages at the National Shrine\, gives a homily titled: “Eucharist and Pilgrimage: the Great Intercessory Prayer” as part of our Heritage Talk Series.  \nFollowing the event\, the presentation will be made available for viewing on the National Shrine’s Website and YouTube Channel. \nMore about the speaker:\nA native of New York\, Vito Anthony Buonanno was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1981. During his years in Brooklyn\, Monsignor Buonanno’s ministry was that of associate pastor and pastor; a member of the Diocesan Art and Architecture Committee; Interim Director of Liturgy (2005-07) and Associate Director of Liturgy (2007-09). Monsignor Buonanno also helped the Diocese of Brooklyn in planning\, coordinating\, and assisting at several diocesan pilgrimages to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. \nMonsignor Buonanno was appointed Director of Pilgrimages at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception\, Washington\, DC\, in 2009. In 2012\, Pope Benedict XVI named him a Chaplain to His Holiness with the title “Reverend Monsignor.” For the last sixteen years\, Monsignor Buonanno has guided and facilitated pilgrimages to the National Shrine from dioceses across the United States\, religious communities\, Catholic organizations\, and schools. \nMore about the session:\nThe focus of any pilgrimage is prayer\, specifically the celebration of Eucharist. The oldest pilgrimages\, second only to those to the Holy Land to walk the paths of Jesus\, are the Marian pilgrimages. The faithful journeyed to the place of miraculous images and apparitions to offer prayers of intercession\, thanksgiving\, and devotion. \nLittle has changed over the centuries. What is different\, unique\, about pilgrimages to the National Shrine\, is that the pilgrim is offered the opportunity to pray at “pilgrimage sites” from around the world in one location: a world of Marian devotion under one roof. \nThe chapels and oratories of the National Shrine are filial in that each relates to the mother shrine in the country of its origin. Each chapel or oratory is adorned with either a certified exact copy\, or an heirloom replica\, or an original work of art depicting the Blessed Mother. When crossing the threshold into one of the chapels or oratories\, the pilgrim enters not only a new space but also a different ethos by virtue of culture\, ethnicity\, and spirituality. The journey into each chapel or oratory is a pilgrimage unto itself\, a pilgrimage within a pilgrimage. Whether a pilgrim to Jerusalem or a pilgrim to Mary’s Shrine in Washington\, D.C.\, each discovers the same basic truth: being a Christian is a pilgrimage and Eucharist is our prayer.

SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Eucharist: Comfort of Martyrs
DESCRIPTION:Easter Sunday 2024 marked the centennial anniversary of the celebration of the first Public Mass held inside the National Shrine. The celebration of the inauguration of the liturgical life of this grand and noble votive church in honor of Mary\, the Immaculate Conception\, will be celebrated throughout 2024 and 2025. \nJudith Kelly\, a longtime social justice activist in the Washington\, D.C. area\, will offer a talk inspired by Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko\, the Martyr of Solidarity\, entitled “Eucharist: Comfort of Martyrs.” We invite you to join us in the Crypt Church following the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Monday January 20\, 2025. \nFollowing the event\, the presentation will be made available for viewing on the National Shrine’s Website and YouTube Channel. \nMore about the speaker and session:\nA longtime member of Pax Christi USA\, Judith Kelly is originally from the D.C. Metro area and has traveled to conflict zones on human rights delegations since the early 1990s. She was honored with the Pax Christi Metro DC-Baltimore “Peacemaker of the Year” award in 2014\, and is the author of the best-selling biography\, Just Call Me Jerzy (available in the National Shrine bookstore)\, which chronicles the witness of Solidarity Chaplain Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko\, the martyr of the Solidarity movement. In her research into the life of Fr. Jerzy\, Judith learned that the young priest had twice visited the National Shrine and celebrated Mass in the chapel of Our Lady of Good Counsel. \nBorn in 1947\, Fr. Jerzy was ordained in 1972 by (Bl.) Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński\, Archbishop of Warsaw. Fr. Jerzy was a simple\, shy\, devout priest. In August 1980\, the Gdansk ship workers went on strike and then the Warsaw steelworkers. The workers requested a priest to offer Mass: the chancery sent Fr. Jerzy. His life would never be the same – and neither would the Solidarity movement. The steel workers captured the heart of Fr. Jerzy\, and he became their pastor\, standing in “living solidarity” with the movement. \nIn December 1981\, the Polish Communist government declared martial law and Solidarity was banned. A few months later\, Fr. Jerzy offered a “Mass for the Nation\,” which was attended to over-flowing. Fr. Jerzey was now the spiritual inspiration of the movement. Every month thereafter\, a Mass for the Nation was offered\, and his sermons were broadcast not only in Poland\, but throughout Europe. The regime took notice\, and efforts to silence him began in earnest. On October 19\, 1984\, while returning from an evening Mass at a remote church\, security officers stopped Fr. Jerzy and his driver. Eleven days later\, his tortured body was found. He was 37 years old. The driver had escaped and lived to tell of the events. \nFr. Jerzy Popieluszko was declared a martyr by the Roman Catholic Church and beatified on June 6\, 2010.

SUMMARY:Advent Rorate Mass
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, December 20\, 2024\, at 7:00 a.m.\, please join the Basilica of the National Shrine and Monsignor Walter R. Rossi\, rector and celebrant\, at the Crypt Church for the celebration of the ancient and beloved Advent tradition of the Rorate Mass in honor of the Blessed Mother\, as part of our celebration of “100 Years of Worship.” \n\nThis Advent tradition\, dating from the eighth century\, takes its name from the incipit of the Introit of the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the Advent votive Masses of the Blessed Mother: roráte\, coeli\, désuper (drop down\, ye heavens). Traditionally\, the first Mass of the day was celebrated after Lauds or dawn. The Rorate Mass is celebrated before Lauds and before dawn. \nIn the winter darkness\, the faithful would walk to their churches carrying their lanterns or candles to light their way. Upon their arrival\, they would illuminate the church with their lanterns and candles around the altar. As Mass was celebrated the sun rose\, illuminating the interior of the church. Thus\, the symbolism of “Mary\, the Dawn” and “Christ the Perfect Day.” \nEveryone is invited to bring a lantern or a candle to “light their way” and to illuminate the Crypt Church during the celebration of the Eucharist. \nThe Rorate Mass will also be livestreamed on www.nationalshrine.org/mass.

SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Eucharist and Mother Teresa
DESCRIPTION:Easter Sunday 2024 marked the centennial anniversary of the celebration of the first public Mass held inside the National Shrine. The celebration of the inauguration of the liturgical life of this grand and noble votive church in honor of Mary\, the Immaculate Conception\, will be celebrated throughout 2024 and 2025. \nFather Brian Kolodiejchuk\, M.C.\, Ph.D.\, the former Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers and postulator of the Causes of Beatification and Canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and the director of the Mother Teresa Institute\, will offer a talk entitled “Eucharist and Mother Teresa.” We invite you to join us in the Crypt Church following the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Friday September 20\, 2024. \nFollowing the event\, the presentation will be made available for viewing on the National Shrine’s website and YouTube channel. \nFr. Brian and His Connection to Mother Teresa\nOn Sunday\, October 15\, 1972\, in the Great Upper Church\, Mother Teresa of Calcutta spoke after Mass. She was in Washington under the auspices of the Catholic Relief Services\, New York. This was the first of several visits by Mother Teresa to the National Shrine. Her final visit was on December 8\, 1995\, two years before her death on September 9\, 1997. \nThe 20-year relationship that Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk\, a co-founding member of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers\, had with Mother Teresa began five years after her first visit to the National Shrine (1977-97). After her death\, Fr. Brian became the postulator for the cause of her beatification and canonization. \nAs part of this year-long celebration of the “100 Years of Worship” at the National Shrine\, Fr. Brian will share his experiences of Mother Teresa and her understanding of Eucharist. \nSt. Teresa of Calcutta always connected the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and to His presence in the poor. As the Catechism of the Church states\, “The Eucharist commits us to the poor. To receive in truth the Body and the Blood of Christ given up for us\, we must recognize Christ in the poorest\, his brethren\,” (1320). This talk will present how Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity expressed their faith in the Eucharist and served Him in the poorest of the poor. \nAs one of the many who worshipped at the National Shrine\, Mother Teresa also has the unique honor of being one of the saints of the National Shrine. \nBooks Edited By Fr. Brian Available At the Shrine Book Shop \nMother Teresa: Come Be My Light: Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta\, by Mother Teresa\, edited by Brian Kolodiejchuk M.C.\, (2007); in paperback (2009). \nA Call to Mercy: Hearts to Love\, Hands to Serve\, Mother Teresa; compiled and edited by Brian Kolodiejchuk M.C. SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Eucharist and Dorothy Day
DESCRIPTION:Easter Sunday 2024 marked the centennial anniversary of the celebration of the first Public Mass held inside the National Shrine. The celebration of the inauguration of the liturgical life of this grand and noble votive church in honor of Mary\, the Immaculate Conception\, will be celebrated throughout 2024 and 2025. \nWe invite you to join us in the Crypt Church for the next Heritage Talk on Saturday July 20\, 2024\, following the 12:10 p.m. Mass. \nDr. William L. Portier\, PhD\, the former Mary Ann Spearin Chair of Catholic Theology at the University of Dayton\, will offer a presentation entitled “Eucharist and Dorothy Day.” Dr. Portier is the president (2014-18) of the College Theology Society and a member of the National Board of the Lilly Fellows Program Network. \nFollowing the event\, the presentation will be made available for viewing on the National Shrine’s Website and YouTube Channel. \n\nMore About the Talk:\nDr. William L. Portier\, noted theologian\, author\, respected teacher\, will speak on the Eucharist and the life of Dorothy Day. \nThe life of this remarkable woman is filled with many twists and turns\, many epiphanies that help to form a woman of conviction and of faith.  Dr. Portier will speak of Dorothy’s vision of “the importance of making the Eucharist present in our everyday life.” In addition\, he will speak of the sacramental life of the National Shrine and the relationship of Dorothy with the National Shrine\, particularly of one day in December 1932\, when Dorothy attended Mass in the Crypt Church and offered the prayer that would change her life. \nDorothy Day and the Eucharist is not something new; she was already writing about the Mystical Body of Christ in 1935. What is new is the perspective that time and history has given to scholars such as Dr. Portier\, a historical and systematic theologian. \n\nSelect Publications by William L. Portier:\nEvery Catholic An Apostle: A Life of Thomas A. Judge\, CM\, 1868-1933 (Catholic University Press\, 2017). \nDivided Friends: Portraits of the Roman Catholic Modernist Crisis in the United States (2013). \nTradition and Incarnation: Foundations of Christian Theology (1993). \nIsaac Hecker and the First Vatican Council\, Including Hecker’s “Notes in Italy\, 1869-1870” (1985). \nPublication Pending by William L. Portier:\nA Mystical Body in the American Century\, in which Dorothy Day is one of the main figures. Release date to be determined. CUA Press.
