SUMMARY:Choral Concert for the Commemoration of All Souls
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to attend the Choir of the Basilica’s annual All Souls Concert on Monday\, November 2\, 2026\, at 7:00 p.m. in the Crypt Church\, entitled “A Concert of Remembrance: Music for the Commemoration of All Souls.” \nThe theme of this year’s concert was chosen to reflect on the importance of remembering\, whether it be significant anniversaries\, the lives of the saints\, those who have gone before\, or significant occasions. Music expressing our nation’s cultural heritage will celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence and commemorate the lives of those lost as we mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of 9/11. Other works are chosen to honor the lives of the saints\, including the recently beatified Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen\, a life-long friend of the National Shrine\, Saint Bernadette of Lourdes\, whose relics were venerated at the Basilica from September 18 to 20\, and Saint Francis of Assisi\, the 800th anniversary of whose death was commemorated on October 3. The program will include works by Aaron Copland\, Moses Hogan\, Gerald Near\, Jonathan Dove\, and David Bednall. \nThe concert will also be livestreamed on the Basilica’s YouTube and Facebook pages\, as well as at nationalshrine.org/mass.

SUMMARY:Rorate Mass: Candlelit Mass before Dawn
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, December 18\, 2026\, at 7:00 a.m. in the Crypt Church\, please join the Basilica for the celebration of an ancient Advent tradition\, the Rorate Mass. \nThe Rorate Mass\, a votive Mass in honor of the Blessed Mother during Advent is an ancient and venerable tradition. It takes its name from the incipit or beginning phrase of the Introit\, Rorate Caeli de super (Let the heavens rain it down). \nTraditionally\, in monasteries and convents\, the first Mass of the day is celebrated after Lauds. The Rorate Mass was granted permission centuries ago\, to be celebrated before Lauds; before the dawn. People were originally drawn to the Mass\, not because of the candlelight\, but because as the liturgy progressed\, light from the rising sun filtered into the Churches\, reminding the faithful of the coming of the Eternal Light. \nAll are invited to attend this Mass\, and to bring candles to light the Crypt Church. For those who cannot attend in person\, the Mass will be livestreamed at www.nationalshrine.org/mass.
