DESCRIPTION:The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites the faithful to attend the Annual Maritime Day Mass on Saturday\, May 18th in the Crypt Church. The Most Reverend Brendan Cahill\, Bishop of the Diocese of Victoria\, Texas and Promoter of the Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) will be the celebrant and homilist. There are more than 100 AOS chaplains\, maritime deacons and lay ecclesial serving in more than 50 ports. These chaplains serve in ministry to seafarers\, fisher men and women\, their families\, and all who work or travel on the seas.

Come and experience this moving liturgy as we commemorate the earthly death of our Lord\, a death which three days later would bring salvation to all the world. The faithful will hear from the Solemn Proclamation from the Gospel of John of Jesus’ Condemnation and Death and includes individual Veneration of the Cross by the Congregation. \nVeneration of the Relics of Christ’s Passion:\n7:00 am – 6:00 pm (Except during Stations of the Cross at 12:00 p.m.)\, Crypt Church \nOn Good Friday\, April 19\, the National Shrine will have Exposition of the Relics of the Passion in the Crypt Church from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 pm. The relics will be displayed for veneration by the faithful throughout the day except for the hour between 12 noon and 1:00 p.m.\, at which time the Stations of the Cross will be celebrated. Following the Stations\, the relics will be returned for veneration until 6:30 pm. \nThe relics include a particle from the table of the Lord’s Supper\, stone particles from the Garden of Gethsemane\, particles of the pillar of the scourging\, the purple garment worn by Jesus\, a spine from the crown of thorns\, stones particles from Mount Calvary\, a particle of the inscription tablet\, shavings of the nails or spikes\, particles of the sponge and reed\, particle of the seamless linen garment worn by Jesus\, the lance which pierced his side\, the bindings and cloths used in the burial of Jesus\, stones from the Holy Sepulchre\, and a particle of the True Cross. SUMMARY:24 Hours for the Lord: 40 Hours Devotion
DESCRIPTION:Opening Mass of 24 Hours for the Lord: 40 Hours Devotion\nIn observance of Pope Francis’ annual Lenten initiative “24 Hours for the Lord\,” the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will once again host 40 Hours Devotion. \nThe Basilica’s “24 Hours for the Lord: 40 Hours Devotion” Lenten observance will begin with an Opening Mass on Thursday\, March 28\, at 5:15pm and conclude with a Closing Mass on Saturday\, March 30\, at 5:15pm. \nThe Opening Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese of the Military Services\, USA.  Solemn Exposition will take place continuously\, to include overnight hours\, through the Closing Mass on Saturday\, March 30\, at 5:15pm.  The Closing Mass will conclude with a Eucharistic Procession through the Great Upper Church followed by Solemn Benediction. \nThe Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available during the Basilica’s regularly scheduled hours (7:45am – 8:15am; 10am – 12 noon; and 3:30pm to 6pm) in the Chapel of Our Lady of Hostyn\, the Confessional Chapel. \nThe faithful are invited to spend time in Adoration before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament during the National Shrine’s 40 Hours Devotion in observance of Pope Francis’ “24 Hours for the Lord” initiative.
