SUMMARY:2022 Summer Organ Recital Series – Nicholas Capozzoli
DESCRIPTION:Join the Basilica for the sixth performance in our 2022 Summer Organ Recital Series on August 7 at 6:00 PM in the Great Upper Church. Nicholas Capozzoli of Montreal\, Canada will perform. \nNicholas Capozzoli\nNicholas Capozzoli has established himself as a solo organist\, collaborative artist\, and scholar with great distinction and versatility. His artistic accomplishments have been recognized throughout North America\, garnering prizes in the Canadian International Organ Competition\, Taylor Organ Competition\, AGO/Quimby Competition for Young Organists\, and Carol Teti Memorial Organ Competition. An advocate for research into music by female and marginalized composers\, his doctoral thesis on the life and music of Claire Delbos (1906-1959) is the first study of its kind. A chapter of this paper was awarded Second Prize in the Dean’s Essay Competition at McGill University. Nicholas is a member of The Diapason’s “20 under 30 Class of 2015\,” which recognizes individuals under the age of 30 who have made significant contributions to the fields of organ\, harpsichord\, and church music. He is also featured in the critically acclaimed CBC documentary “Pipe Dreams.” \nNicholas has performed in esteemed venues including Maison Symphonique (Montreal\, QC)\, Washington National Cathedral (Washington\, DC)\, St. Paul’s Bloor Street (Toronto\, ON)\, Orgelpark (Amsterdam\, NL)\, and the Musée des Augustins (Toulouse\, France). He appears as a solo artist at major festivals and conferences\, including the 2019 Organix Festival\, 2017 AGO/RCCO Montreal Organ Festival\, 2016 Historical Keyboard Society of North America conference\, 2014 AGO National Convention\, 2014 Piccolo Spoleto Festival “L’Organo Series\,” and the 2013 NPM Convention. He has presented workshops for the 2020 AGO OrganFest\, SUNY Potsdam\, and the Binghamton AGO chapter. \nNicholas holds a Doctor of Music in Performance Studies from McGill University\, as well as degrees in historical performance and organ from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. His teachers include Hans-Ola Ericsson\, James David Christie\, and Webb Wiggins. While at Oberlin\, he taught secondary organ and harpsichord students and served as an instructor at two summer academies. He is the recipient of Oberlin College’s Selby Harlan Houston Prize (excellence in organ and music theory)\, Friends of the Library Excellence in Research Award\, James H. Hall Prize in Musicology\, Pi Kappa Lambda Prize for Musicianship\, and Earl L. Russell Award in Historical Performance. An avid collaborator with vocalists and instrumentalists\, Nicholas was the musical director for Oberlin’s production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. He has also played with the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra\, Opera McGill\, and the Montreal choirs Musica Orbium and One Equall Musick. \nNicholas is Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral\, Montreal\, where he oversees one of Canada’s busiest liturgical music programs. He is also Director of Chapel Music at the Montreal Diocesan Theological College and Associate Editor for the online journal Vox Humana. SUMMARY:2022 Summer Organ Recital Series – Benjamin LaPrairie
DESCRIPTION:Join the Basilica for the seventh performance in our 2022 Summer Organ Recital Series on August 14 at 6:00 PM in the Great Upper Church. Benjamin LaPrairie\, Associate Director of Music at the Basilica\, will perform. \nBenjamin LaPrairie\nBenjamin LaPrairie serves as Associate Director of Music at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington\, D.C. Since 2011\, he has assisted in the leadership of the music department and has regularly accompanied daily\, Sunday\, and other special Masses throughout the year. Notable liturgies include the Canonization Mass of Saint Junípero Serra\, celebrated by Pope Francis\, and the Funeral Mass of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. In May of 2019\, Benjamin performed with the Choir of the Basilica in concerts and liturgies in Rome for the commemoration of 35 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Holy See. Previous posts include Principal Organist at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Washington\, D.C.\, and Director of Music at St. Patrick Catholic Church in St. Charles\, Illinois. \nAs a composer\, Benjamin’s works have been performed by the Choir\, Brass\, and Orchestra of the Basilica\, and have been recorded and broadcast worldwide on EWTN\, Salt & Light Media\, and CatholicTV. His setting of Christus Vincit was premiered upon the entrance of Pope Francis into the Great Upper Church of the National Shrine in September of 2015. Recent works include a new setting of Ye Sons and Daughters for the Choir and Orchestra of the Basilica\, and a setting of Joy to the World for the choirs and orchestra of The Catholic University of America. As an organist\, Benjamin has performed throughout the United States and abroad\, and has been featured as a soloist with the Pine Mountain Music Festival\, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City\, NJ\, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC in a performance of Louis Vierne’s Messe Solennelle. Upcoming events include the Eccles Organ Festival at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City\, UT\, the organ dedication series at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Clifton\, VA\, and the premiere of a new Mass setting commissioned for the centennial of St. Francis of Assisi Church in New Orleans\, LA. \nA native of Michigan\, Benjamin is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theater\, and Dance\, where he studied organ with Robert Glasgow\, harpsichord with Edward Parmentier\, and conducting with Jerry Blackstone and Steven Davis. He received a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of Music\, where he studied organ with John Walker\, and was the recipient of the Bruce R. Eicher Prize in Organ. SUMMARY:2022 Summer Organ Recital Series – Monte Maxwell
DESCRIPTION:Join the Basilica for the eighth performance in our 2022 Summer Organ Recital Series on August 21 at 6:00 PM in the Great Upper Church. Monte Maxwell of Annapolis\, Maryland will perform. \nMonte Maxwell\nMonte Maxwell\, Chapel Organist\, Director of Chapel Music and the Midshipmen Symphony Orchestra\, began his service at the United States Naval Academy in 1997. \nMr. Maxwell\, a native of San Angelo\, Texas\, earned his Bachelor of Music Degree from Texas Christian University\, Fort Worth\, studying with Emmet G. Smith. He was then invited to study at the Curtis Institute of Music with John Weaver where he received an Artist Diploma\, Curtis’ highest degree. Mr. Maxwell earned his Master of Music Degree from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City\, also studying with John Weaver. While studying in Philadelphia\, Mr. Maxwell was an Associate Organist at the John Wanamaker Store\, playing the famed six-manual organ\, the largest playing organ in the world. \nAt the Naval Academy\, Mr. Maxwell serves as the principal organist for the Protestant and Catholic services as well as playing for weddings\, memorial services\, funerals\, and performances throughout the year. He commands the five-manual\, 268-rank organ in the main chapel\, which has recently undergone substantial enhancement under his direction and design. His additional responsibilities include working with the Protestant and Catholic Chapel Choirs\, the Protestant Chapel Chorale\, the Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs\, and conducting the annual winter musical theater productions as well as the Naval Academy Midshipmen Symphony Orchestra. He oversees the annual Chapel Organ Concert series which features guest performing artists from across the United States. He has also served as the Chairman of the Naval Academy Music Department and Director of Instrumental Activities. \nMr. Maxwell’s annual All Saints’ Day Organ Concert has become a staple of the Naval Academy and greater Annapolis cultural community. The standing-room-only event drew some 3\,000 people into the Naval Academy Chapel in 1998\, breaking all records in attendance for any event throughout the Chapel’s history. Due to the popularity of this event\, the Academy now offers two ticketed performances of this concert each year. He has performed in the United States\, South America\, Eastern and Western Europe\, and Canada\, and is an active member of the American Guild of Organists. SUMMARY:2022 Summer Organ Recital Series – Lisa Mitchell Tyler
DESCRIPTION:Join the Basilica for the final performance in our 2022 Summer Organ Recital Series on August 28 at 6:00 PM in the Great Upper Church. Lisa Mitchell Tyler of Herndon\, Virginia will perform. \nLisa Mitchell Tyler\nLisa Mitchell Tyler is currently serving as Organist/Choir Director at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Potomac\, Maryland. Lisa began her organ studies in 1982 with William Neil of the National Symphony Orchestra. She continued her studies at Michigan State University with Corliss Arnold\, University of Michigan with James Kibbie\, and The Juilliard School with Leonard Raver\, organist with the New York Philharmonic. She currently studies with composer/organist Paul Leavitt. She has worked with brass musicians extensively\, performing several concerts with Chuck Seipp\, former trumpet soloist with The U.S. Army Band. Venues have included National City Christian Church in Washington\, D.C.\, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington\, D.C. and St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Clifton\, VA. \nIn 2017\, she performed with trumpeter Phillip Snedecor of the Hartt School of Music at Grace Church in New York City\, NY. She has also presented concerts with A. Scott Wood of the Amadeus Concerts at National Presbyterian Church in Washington\, D.C.; The Brass of Peace under the direction of Sylvia Alimena at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land\, and under their founder Gilbert H. Mitchell at The National Cathedral; and a recital with Jeffrey Work\, Principal Trumpet of the Oregon Symphony\, at Cherrydale United Methodist Church in Arlington\, Virginia. She has performed for the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and for the combined D.C. area AGO chapters during the annual Bach Marathon at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. She is the recipient of a 2nd place award in the Community Keyboard Division of the Boulder Bach Festival’s 2020 World Bach Competition and a Semi-Finalist award in music from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. She lives in Herndon with her husband and two children.
