SUMMARY:Veneration of the Relics of St. Padre Pio
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday May 21st and Sunday May 22nd\, Relics of Saint Padre Pio will be available for veneration at the National Shrine. Through partnership with the Saint Pio Foundation and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington\, the first and second-class relics\, which include the crusts of Padre Pio’s wounds\, cotton gauze bearing his blood stains\, a lock of his hair\, his handkerchief soaked with his sweat only hours before he died\, and a piece of his mantle\, will be available for public veneration on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. through 4:00 p.m. in the Great Upper Church\, followed by a Mass in honor of Padre Pio at 4:30 p.m. celebrated by His Eminence Wilton Cardinal Gregory. SUMMARY:Archdiocese for the Military Services\, U.S.A. Pilgrimage and Memorial Mass
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 22nd\, 2022\, the Archdiocese of the Military Services USA will host its annual Pilgrimage and Memorial Mass. The pilgrimage will begin with the availability of the Sacrament of Reconciliation at 3:00 p.m. in the Crypt Church of the Basilica. Recitation of the Rosary will take place in the Great Upper Church at 3:45 p.m. Following the Rosary and a musical prelude\, the Most Rev. Timothy P. Broglio\, Archbishop of the Military Services USA\, will be the principal celebrant and homilist of the Memorial Mass that begins at 4:30 p.m. \nHonoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces\, particularly those who paid the ultimate price for American liberty\, the Memorial Mass begins with the posting of the colors and singing of the National Anthem. It concludes with the playing of Taps. The Memorial Mass will be taped for broadcast on EWTN on Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 30 at 12 noon.

The National Shrine’s “leg” of the relay begins at 5:45 p.m.\, immediately following the 5:15 p.m. Mass in the Crypt Church. With the coming of midnight on June 24\, 2022\, the entire world will have been encircled in prayer for our priests on this Annual Global Rosary Relay Day.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Basilica for the first performance in our 2022 Summer Organ Recital Series on July 3 at 6:00 PM in the Great Upper Church. Andrew Vu\, Assistant Director of Music at the Basilica\, will perform. \nAndrew Vu\nAndrew Vu serves as Assistant Director of Music of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. A native of Vietnam\, he came to the United States at the age of thirteen to study piano and musicianship with Molly and Charles Stier. He completed his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from The Catholic University of America\, where he studied under James Litzelman. His organ instructors include Jeffrey Pannebaker\, Ed Moore\, and Ronald Stolk\, with whom he completed a Master of Music degree in 2017. Andrew also studied choral conducting with Leo Nestor and Timothy McDonnell and voice with Rick Christman. \nAn award-winning pianist\, Andrew received the Honor Prize of the 2007 Maryland MCMTA Competition\, the 2012 Benjamin T. Rome School of Music Performance Award from The Catholic University of America\, and the Second Place in the 2012 Stravinsky Award Bach Competition. He has been a student assistant for the annual Washington International Piano Festival at The Catholic University of America. As an organist\, Andrew served at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Parish in Bethesda\, Maryland and St. Peter’s Parish in Olney\, Maryland for ten years. Dr. Peter Latona\, Director of Music at the Basilica\, will perform. \nPeter Latona\nPeter Latona (b. 1968) is the Director of Music for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (Washington\, D.C.)\, the preeminent Marian shrine of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Recognized as a conductor\, composer\, organist\, improviser\, and teacher\, he is dedicated to providing the highest standard in sacred music within the context of the Roman Catholic Liturgy. \nAn award-winning organist\, Dr. Latona has performed throughout the United States\, Europe\, and the Holy Land\, has presented workshops on improvisation\, and has released a recording\, An Organ Pilgrimage\, on the Raven label\, featuring all four pipe organs at the Basilica. In 2012\, he performed to an audience of one thousand\, having been invited as a featured artist for the Festspiele Europaische Wochen in Passau\, Germany. As the conductor of the Choir of the Basilica\, he released numerous recordings of sacred choral music\, presented concerts in the United States and abroad\, performed nationally for the American Guild of Organists\, the National Pastoral Musicians Association\, the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedrals\, the Church Music Association of America\, and internationally as a featured conductor in the Festival Internazionale di Musica e Arte Sacra. Among his recently completed recording projects is Tu es Petrus: A Papal Tribute in Music\, which commemorates the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI and celebrates the Petrine ministry of Pope Francis\, as well as Te Deum: The Sacred Music of Peter Latona\, which was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus and features many of the works composed by Dr. Latona for the National Shrine. \nActive as a composer\, Dr. Latona is published by Morningstar Music Publishers\, as well as Canticanova Publications and G.I.A. His music has been featured in various media productions\, including Bishop Robert Barron’s well-known series Catholicism. He recently won first prize in a composition competition sponsored by the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians for his Priests of God/Servants of God and Go into All the World. He has received commissions from the Knights of Columbus\, the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston\, and the Diocese of Helena\, as well as by the Archdioceses of Washington\, New York\, and Philadelphia. His music was performed during the Apostolic Visit of His Holiness Benedict XVI to the United States in 2008 and in each city visited by Pope Francis during his 2015 Apostolic Visit to the United States. In recognition of this\, Dr. Latona was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal by Pope Francis. Dr. Latona also serves on the composition faculty of The Catholic University of America’s Benjamin T. Rome School of Music. Dr. Latona is a graduate of Bucknell University (B. Thomas Sheehan of the National Cathedral in Washington\, D.C. will perform. \nThomas Sheehan\nThomas Sheehan is the Organist and Associate Director of Music at the National Cathedral in Washington\, D.C.\, where he is responsible for the organ program at the Cathedral\, covering both liturgical and concert expressions of organ music. In this position\, he has played for several high-profile civic events. \nPrior to this position\, he served on the music staffs of the Memorial Church\, Harvard University; Saint Mark’s Church in Philadelphia\, PA; and Trinity Episcopal Church in Princeton\, NJ. Tom is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music\, where he received diplomas in organ and harpsichord\, studying with Alan Morrison and Leon Schelhase. He received both the Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from Westminster Choir College in Princeton\, NJ\, as a student of Ken Cowan. He is currently a doctoral candidate in organ at Boston University as a student of Peter Sykes. In 2016 he was named one of The Diapason’s “20 under 30\,” a list of rising artists in the field of organ playing.
