SUMMARY:Heritage Talk: Eucharist and Mother Teresa
DESCRIPTION:Easter Sunday 2024 marked the centennial anniversary of the celebration of the first public Mass held inside the National Shrine. The celebration of the inauguration of the liturgical life of this grand and noble votive church in honor of Mary\, the Immaculate Conception\, will be celebrated throughout 2024 and 2025. \nFather Brian Kolodiejchuk\, M.C.\, Ph.D.\, the former Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers and postulator of the Causes of Beatification and Canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and the director of the Mother Teresa Institute\, will offer a talk entitled “Eucharist and Mother Teresa.” We invite you to join us in the Crypt Church following the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Friday September 20\, 2024. \nFollowing the event\, the presentation will be made available for viewing on the National Shrine’s website and YouTube channel. \nFr. Brian and His Connection to Mother Teresa\nOn Sunday\, October 15\, 1972\, in the Great Upper Church\, Mother Teresa of Calcutta spoke after Mass. She was in Washington under the auspices of the Catholic Relief Services\, New York. This was the first of several visits by Mother Teresa to the National Shrine. Her final visit was on December 8\, 1995\, two years before her death on September 9\, 1997. \nThe 20-year relationship that Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk\, a co-founding member of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers\, had with Mother Teresa began five years after her first visit to the National Shrine (1977-97). After her death\, Fr. Brian became the postulator for the cause of her beatification and canonization. \nAs part of this year-long celebration of the “100 Years of Worship” at the National Shrine\, Fr. Brian will share his experiences of Mother Teresa and her understanding of Eucharist. \nSt. Teresa of Calcutta always connected the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and to His presence in the poor. As the Catechism of the Church states\, “The Eucharist commits us to the poor. To receive in truth the Body and the Blood of Christ given up for us\, we must recognize Christ in the poorest\, his brethren\,” (1320). This talk will present how Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity expressed their faith in the Eucharist and served Him in the poorest of the poor. \nAs one of the many who worshipped at the National Shrine\, Mother Teresa also has the unique honor of being one of the saints of the National Shrine. \nBooks Edited By Fr. Brian Available At the Shrine Book Shop \nMother Teresa: Come Be My Light: Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta\, by Mother Teresa\, edited by Brian Kolodiejchuk M.C.\, (2007); in paperback (2009). \nA Call to Mercy: Hearts to Love\, Hands to Serve\, Mother Teresa; compiled and edited by Brian Kolodiejchuk M.C. (2018). \n

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us in celebrating the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. \nOn Sunday\, October 20th\, the “Heritage Talks” series continues with a homily by Monsignor Walter R. Rossi\, J.C.L.\, rector of the National Shrine: “Eucharist: Our Firm Foundation.” This homily will be given at the solemn Eucharist at 12 Noon and will be livestreamed. \nIn 1997\, then Father Rossi completed his licentiate in Canon Law at The Catholic University of America and began his tenure as director of pilgrimages. During this time\, Father Rossi also served as secretary-treasurer and president of the National Association of Shrine and Pilgrimage Apostolate (NASPA). \nOrdained a priest for the Diocese of Scranton\, Pennsylvania\, in 1987\, Father Rossi was elevated to the rank of Chaplain to His Holiness with the title “Monsignor” by Pope John Paul II in 2004. \nThe following year\, the Board of Trustees of the National Shrine appointed him the second rector and the eleventh director of the National Shrine\, a position in which he continues to serve today. \nAs the spiritual and administrative leader of the National Shrine for almost twenty years\, Monsignor Rossi has not only fulfilled the customary presbyterial duties of dispensing the Sacraments and preaching the Gospel\, he has also held the unique responsibility of directing and supervising the installation of chapels\, oratories\, mosaics\, and the celebration of special liturgical and para-liturgical events\, all of which have served to strengthen the faith and provide the faithful with inspiration and illumination of its wonders and mercies. All these efforts have helped to fulfill what Bishop Shahan wrote in 1910\, that this National Shrine\, would be “inside and outside a monument to artistic truth and sincerity and thus a mirror of all the beauties of our venerable and holy religion.” \nSaturday\, October 19\n\n\n\nTime:\nLocation and additional information:\n\n\n4:30 p.m.\nVigil Mass – Great Upper Church\n\n\n\nSunday\, October 20\n\n\n\nTime:\nLocation and additional information:\n\n\n7:30 a.m.\nMass – Crypt Church\n\n\n9:00 a.m.\nMass – Great Upper Church\n\n\n10:30 a.m.\nMass – Great Upper Church\n\n\n12 Noon*\nSolemn Mass: “Eucharist: Our Firm Foundation” – Great Upper Church\n\n\n2:30 p.m.*\nMisa – Iglesia Superior\n\n\n4:30 p.m.\nMass – Great Upper Church\n\n\n\n*Livestreamed on www.nationalshrine.org/mass \nConfessions will be heard on Sunday at the regularly scheduled hours: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Noon)\, 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. (en Español)\, and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
