SUMMARY:24 Hours for the Lord: 40 Hours Devotion Opening Mass and Closing Mass
DESCRIPTION:In observance of Pope Francis’ annual Lenten initiative “24 Hours for the Lord\,” the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will once again host 40 Hours Devotion. \nThe Basilica’s “24 Hours for the Lord: 40 Hours Devotion” Lenten observance will begin with an Opening Mass on Thursday\, March 11\, at 5:15 p.m. and conclude with a Closing Mass on Saturday\, March 13\, at 4:30 p.m. \nThe Opening Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Christophe Pierre\, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. Solemn Exposition will take place continuously\, to include overnight hours\, through the Closing Mass on Saturday\, March 13\, at 4:30 p.m.  The Closing Mass will be celebrated by Wilton Cardinal Gregory\, Archbishop of Washington.  \nThe Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available during the Basilica’s regularly scheduled hours (9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.) in the Great Upper Church.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us Sunday\, April 11\, 2021 for our annual Octave of Easter Organ Recital. Adam J. Brakel of Orlando\, Florida will perform. All are welcome. Admission is free\, but reservations will be required. \nAdam J. Brakel will perform works by Niels W. Gade\, Jean-François Dandrieu\, François Roberday\, Joseph Bonnet\, Johann Sebastian Bach\, Healey Willan\, Franz-Xaver Schnizer\, Franz Liszt\, and Maurice Duruflé on the Möller (1965)/Goulding & Wood (2001) organs of the Great Upper Church.  The recital will be open to the public as well as livestreamed on the National Shrine website\, YouTube\, and Vimeo channels. \nHailed as “an absolute organ prodigy” by National Public Radio and “one of the most talented organists in the world” by the Chicago Tribune\, concert organist Adam J. Brakel is a preeminent artist “with the technique and virtuosity that most concert pianists could only dream of.” (NPR)  \nAdam’s celebrated performances span the globe—from coast to coast in the United States to across Europe and Asia. His expansive repertoire includes the entire spectrum of styles featuring the complete organ works of Bach\, Bruhns\, Buxtehude\, Couperin\, Liszt\, de Grigny\, Franck\, Mozart\, Mendelssohn\, and Duruflé. \nBrakel’s performance highlights include the complete works of César Franck\, and\, most notably\, the fiendishly difficult Six Etudes of Jeanne Demessieux\, of which Adam is one of the few organists in the world to have performed and recorded in its entirety. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and Duquesne University\, Adam has a rich and decorated musical pedigree\, having studied with Donald Sutherland and Dame Gillian Weir. He has taken top prizes in the Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition\, the Gruenstein Memorial Organ Competition\, the John Rodland Memorial Scholarship Competition\, the French Organ Music Seminar Competition\, and the Carlene Neihart International Organ Competition. DESCRIPTION:The Archdiocese for the Military Services USA will host its annual Pilgrimage and Memorial Mass on Sunday\, May 16. The pilgrimage will begin with the availability of the Sacrament of Reconciliation at 3:00 p.m. in the Great Upper Church. Following the Sacrament of Reconciliation and a musical prelude\, the Most Rev. Timothy P. Broglio\, Archbishop for the Military Services USA\, will be the principal celebrant and homilist of the Memorial Mass that begins at 4:30 p.m. \nHonoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces\, particularly those who paid the ultimate price for American liberty\, the Memorial Mass begins with the posting of the colors and singing of the National Anthem. It concludes with the playing of taps. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has been chosen by the Holy See to lead the worldwide recitation of the Rosary on Monday\, May 17\, at 12 noon ET/6pm Rome time\, in response to Pope Francis’ call for a “marathon” of prayer during the month of May “to ask for the end of the pandemic.” \nCardinal Wilton Gregory\, Archbishop of Washington and Chairman of the National Shrine Board of Trustees\, will prayerfully lead the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary from the Basilica’s Great Upper Church. \nWith the ability to accommodate 1\,000 people socially distanced in the Great Upper Church with other safety protocols in place\, the event is open to the public and the faithful are encouraged to join this vital prayer effort in person by registering at www.nationalshrine.org/mass-registration. \nFor those unable to attend in person\, the recitation of the Rosary will be livestreamed at www.nationalshrine.org/mass and will be shared with the Holy See for transmission throughout the world. \nFor additional information\, please view the press release.
