SUMMARY:Exposition of the Passion Relics
DESCRIPTION:The Veneration of Relics\, as stipulated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)\, is an acceptable form of devotion and piety (CCC\, 1674). Such expressions of piety extend the liturgical life of the Church but do not replace it. Derived from the liturgy\, they are to “harmonize with the liturgical seasons” and lead the faithful back to the liturgy (CCC\, 1675). In the early Church\, the veneration of the relics of the suffering and death of Our Lord was central to the observances of Holy Week at Jerusalem and the practice of pilgrimage. \nAs a pilgrimage church\, the National Shrine maintains a treasury of relics and reliquaries\, which include those of Jesus Christ and of His Passion. The National Shrine also preserves relics of the Blessed Virgin Mary\, the women who stood with her at the foot of the Cross\, and of the Apostles. \nOn Good Friday\, April 18\, 2025\, the National Shrine will observe Exposition of the Relics of the Passion of Our Lord from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Crypt Church. From 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, exposition will pause for Stations of the Cross and will resume at 1:00 p.m. The line will close at 5:45 p.m. \nThis sacramental event is part of the closing of the Shrine’s celebration of “100 Years of Worship\,” commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first Mass being celebrated at the National Shrine. In addition\, this devotion is especially significant for the faithful during this Jubilee Year of Hope\, as the National Shrine was designated by the U.S. bishops as a special pilgrimage site. \nThe faithful are invited to come\, venerate the holy relics\, and spend time in prayer and meditation of Sacred Scripture.

A life of service to the Church and to God’s people\, we remember him and strive to ‘go out to proclaim the merciful embrace of the Father’ as he urged in his 2015 homily at the Basilica.” \nThis special liturgy and prayer for the late Holy Father will be livestreamed on www.nationalshrine.org/mass and broadcast live on EWTN.

SUMMARY:Veneration of the Relics of St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 15\, 2025\, all are invited to venerate the relics of St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope of Molokai\, which will be exposed in the Crypt Church of the Basilica. The relics will be on display from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. It is fitting that on this day\, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity\, we host the relics of these two saints who are enshrined in Basilica’s Trinity Dome. \nFor more information\, please see our previous blogposts about St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. \nSt. Damien and St. Marianne Cope depicted in the Trinity Dome of the Basilica\nCompleted in 2017 as the ‘crowning jewel’ of the Basilica\, the magnificent Trinity Dome sits at the crossing or central axis of the Great Upper Church. It’s central prominence in the Basilica is symbolic\, for as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and life” (CCC 234). The Trinity Dome contains mosaic depictions of the Holy Trinity\, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception\, and 18 saints — including St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope\, spread around the dome. \nSource: \nRohling\, Geraldine M.\, PhD\, MAEd. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception: Guide and Tour Book. Washington\, D.C.: Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Veneration of a Relic of the True Cross
DESCRIPTION:“We adore you\, O Christ\, and we bless you\, because by your Cross you have redeemed the world.”\n– Gospel Acclamation for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross \nOn Sunday\, September 14\, we invite you to join the National Shrine for a special opportunity of prayer and veneration of a Relic of the True Cross as we contemplate the triumph of the cross\, the ultimate symbol of God’s love. \nIn celebration of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross\, the Basilica will have on display a first-class relic of the True Cross. The relic will be located in the Lower Sanctuary of the Great Upper Church\, and will be available for public veneration beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday\, September 13\, during the Vigil Mass\, and continuing at 9:00 a.m. on September 14\, through the end of the day. \nAs we will sing in the Processional Hymn at Mass: “Ours it is to joy and glory in the Cross of Jesus Christ\, for in Him we find salvation\, resurrection\, life and grace; in him\, too\, are we set free\, saved and brought to victory.” \nMay the Cross of Christ we exalt on this day\, be our “source of mercy and salvation\, resurrection\, life and grace.” \nEntrance Procession Text: Thomas B. Stratman (1939-2008)\, © 1995.

SUMMARY:Advent Rorate Mass
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, December 19\, 2025\, at 7:00 a.m. in the Crypt Church\, please join the Basilica for the celebration of an ancient Advent tradition\, the Rorate Mass. Monsignor Walter R. Rossi\, Rector of the Basilica\, will be the celebrant and homilist. \nThe Rorate Mass\, a votive Mass held in honor of the Blessed Mother during Advent\, is an ancient and venerable tradition. It takes its name from the incipit (or beginning) phrase of the Introit: “Rorate Caeli de super\,” (Let the heavens rain it down). \nTraditionally\, in monasteries and convents\, the first Mass of the day is celebrated after Lauds. The Rorate Mass was granted permission centuries ago\, to be celebrated before Lauds; before the dawn. People were originally drawn to the Mass\, not because of the candlelight\, but because as the liturgy progressed\, light from the rising sun filtered into the Churches\, reminding the faithful of the coming of the Eternal Light. \nAs the Church concludes the 2025 Jubilee Year and nears the end of the Advent season\, we reflect upon the theme of hope. This Jubilee of Hope affirms St. Paul’s message to the Romans that “Hope does not disappoint” and the season of Advent similarly highlights the hope that comes from the birth of Christ. \nThis Advent tradition is a visible example of the line from Eucharistic Prayer III\, “So that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.” The rising sun also gives expression to the hymn: “Mary\, the Dawn; Christ\, the Perfect Day.” \nAll are invited to attend this Mass\, and to bring candles to light the Crypt Church. \nFor those who cannot attend in person\, the Mass will be livestreamed at www.nationalshrine.org/mass.

SUMMARY:Lenten Reflection: The Dead Sea Scrolls and Their Enduring Legacy
DESCRIPTION:The season of Lent is a time to reflect on the solemnity of the Lord’s sacrifice and prepare our hearts for the celebration of Easter. We invite you to join the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for our annual Lenten Reflection Series. \nThe first talk in this series will be on Thursday\, February 26\, immediately following the 5:15 p.m. Mass in the Crypt Church. In this first reflection\, Dr. Robert “Bobby” Duke\, Chief Curatorial Officer at the Museum of the Bible\, will present a talk entitled: The Dead Sea Scrolls and Their Enduring Legacy. \nImagine holding a fragment of history that once echoed in the hills of Qumran two thousand years ago. That’s the world Dr. Duke will draw us into as he unpacks the Dead Sea Scrolls – texts that capture the prayers\, struggles\, and hopes of a community living at the time of Jesus. Drawing from years of research\, he reveals how these writings trace the transmission of Scripture\, illuminate the everyday faith of ancient Jews\, and connect us to the very roots of Christian and Jewish traditions. Dr. Duke’s engaging presentation invites us to view the Dead Sea Scrolls not merely as ancient artifacts\, but as living documents that have shaped and inspired faith communities for centuries. \nNote: This talk will be recorded and made available on our YouTube channel.

Drawing from his pastoral experience\, Father Ayala explores how the season of Lent reorients our priorities toward what truly matters: love\, reconciliation\, prayer\, and a deeper relationship with God. This reflection offers a quiet\, hopeful invitation to live more intentionally as we journey toward Easter. \nAbout the Speaker\nFather Ismael Ayala is a Catholic Priest of the Archdiocese of Washington and serves as Director of Liturgy at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Before entering seminary\, he studied death and dying with the intention of working in grief counseling\, a background that continues to inform his pastoral approach to accompaniment\, loss\, and hope. \nOrdained to the priesthood after discerning God’s call to ministerial service\, Father Mel brings together pastoral sensitivity\, theological depth\, and a deep love for the Church’s liturgical life. His ministry is shaped by a desire to help people encounter God through prayer\, reflection\, and the rhythms of the liturgical year. \nNote: This talk will be recorded and made available on our YouTube channel.
