SUMMARY:2022 Summer Organ Recital Series – Dr. Peter Latona
DESCRIPTION:Join the Basilica for the second performance in our 2022 Summer Organ Recital Series on July 10 at 6:00 PM in the Great Upper Church. Dr. Peter Latona\, Director of Music at the Basilica\, will perform. \nPeter Latona\nPeter Latona (b. 1968) is the Director of Music for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (Washington\, D.C.)\, the preeminent Marian shrine of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Recognized as a conductor\, composer\, organist\, improviser\, and teacher\, he is dedicated to providing the highest standard in sacred music within the context of the Roman Catholic Liturgy. \nAn award-winning organist\, Dr. Latona has performed throughout the United States\, Europe\, and the Holy Land\, has presented workshops on improvisation\, and has released a recording\, An Organ Pilgrimage\, on the Raven label\, featuring all four pipe organs at the Basilica. In 2012\, he performed to an audience of one thousand\, having been invited as a featured artist for the Festspiele Europaische Wochen in Passau\, Germany. As the conductor of the Choir of the Basilica\, he released numerous recordings of sacred choral music\, presented concerts in the United States and abroad\, performed nationally for the American Guild of Organists\, the National Pastoral Musicians Association\, the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedrals\, the Church Music Association of America\, and internationally as a featured conductor in the Festival Internazionale di Musica e Arte Sacra. Among his recently completed recording projects is Tu es Petrus: A Papal Tribute in Music\, which commemorates the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI and celebrates the Petrine ministry of Pope Francis\, as well as Te Deum: The Sacred Music of Peter Latona\, which was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus and features many of the works composed by Dr. Latona for the National Shrine. \nActive as a composer\, Dr. Latona is published by Morningstar Music Publishers\, as well as Canticanova Publications and G.I.A. His music has been featured in various media productions\, including Bishop Robert Barron’s well-known series Catholicism. He recently won first prize in a composition competition sponsored by the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians for his Priests of God/Servants of God and Go into All the World. He has received commissions from the Knights of Columbus\, the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston\, and the Diocese of Helena\, as well as by the Archdioceses of Washington\, New York\, and Philadelphia. His music was performed during the Apostolic Visit of His Holiness Benedict XVI to the United States in 2008 and in each city visited by Pope Francis during his 2015 Apostolic Visit to the United States. In recognition of this\, Dr. Latona was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal by Pope Francis. Dr. Latona also serves on the composition faculty of The Catholic University of America’s Benjamin T. Rome School of Music. Dr. Latona is a graduate of Bucknell University (B. DESCRIPTION:Join the Basilica for the first performance in our 2022 Summer Organ Recital Series on July 3 at 6:00 PM in the Great Upper Church. Andrew Vu\, Assistant Director of Music at the Basilica\, will perform. \nAndrew Vu\nAndrew Vu serves as Assistant Director of Music of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. A native of Vietnam\, he came to the United States at the age of thirteen to study piano and musicianship with Molly and Charles Stier. He completed his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from The Catholic University of America\, where he studied under James Litzelman. His organ instructors include Jeffrey Pannebaker\, Ed Moore\, and Ronald Stolk\, with whom he completed a Master of Music degree in 2017. Andrew also studied choral conducting with Leo Nestor and Timothy McDonnell and voice with Rick Christman. \nAn award-winning pianist\, Andrew received the Honor Prize of the 2007 Maryland MCMTA Competition\, the 2012 Benjamin T. Rome School of Music Performance Award from The Catholic University of America\, and the Second Place in the 2012 Stravinsky Award Bach Competition. He has been a student assistant for the annual Washington International Piano Festival at The Catholic University of America. As an organist\, Andrew served at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Parish in Bethesda\, Maryland and St. Peter’s Parish in Olney\, Maryland for ten years. For Healing and Hope: A Choral Concert on the Commemoration of All Souls will feature sacred music drawn from the past six centuries. The concert is dedicated to the nearly 5\,000\,000 people worldwide and over 700\,000 in the United States who have died as a result of the pandemic and is offered as a comfort to the countless others who mourn their loss. The Concert is free and open to the public. \nThe Choir of the Basilica will perform works by Dove\, Sumsion\, Palestrina\, Part\, Rorem\, Byrd\, Harris et al. DESCRIPTION:Please join us Sunday\, April 11\, 2021 for our annual Octave of Easter Organ Recital. Adam J. Brakel of Orlando\, Florida will perform. All are welcome. Admission is free\, but reservations will be required. \nAdam J. Brakel will perform works by Niels W. Gade\, Jean-François Dandrieu\, François Roberday\, Joseph Bonnet\, Johann Sebastian Bach\, Healey Willan\, Franz-Xaver Schnizer\, Franz Liszt\, and Maurice Duruflé on the Möller (1965)/Goulding & Wood (2001) organs of the Great Upper Church.  The recital will be open to the public as well as livestreamed on the National Shrine website\, YouTube\, and Vimeo channels. \nHailed as “an absolute organ prodigy” by National Public Radio and “one of the most talented organists in the world” by the Chicago Tribune\, concert organist Adam J. Brakel is a preeminent artist “with the technique and virtuosity that most concert pianists could only dream of.” (NPR)  \nAdam’s celebrated performances span the globe—from coast to coast in the United States to across Europe and Asia. His expansive repertoire includes the entire spectrum of styles featuring the complete organ works of Bach\, Bruhns\, Buxtehude\, Couperin\, Liszt\, de Grigny\, Franck\, Mozart\, Mendelssohn\, and Duruflé. \nBrakel’s performance highlights include the complete works of César Franck\, and\, most notably\, the fiendishly difficult Six Etudes of Jeanne Demessieux\, of which Adam is one of the few organists in the world to have performed and recorded in its entirety. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and Duquesne University\, Adam has a rich and decorated musical pedigree\, having studied with Donald Sutherland and Dame Gillian Weir. He has taken top prizes in the Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition\, the Gruenstein Memorial Organ Competition\, the John Rodland Memorial Scholarship Competition\, the French Organ Music Seminar Competition\, and the Carlene Neihart International Organ Competition.
